Bumper Alerts

If you walk down any aisle of the baby department in stores you will cute crib bedding sets with a super cute crib bumper pads.

Crib bumper pads sound like such a great thing right? Keep little arms and legs from getting trapped in the railings. But not so according to American Academy of Pediatric, Canada Health, Consumer Product Safety Commission, First Candle/National SIDS Alliance, and the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development all urge parents to toss those bumper pads to protect babies from suffocation. Crib bumper pads have been a leading cause of SIDS since the Put Baby Back to Bed campaign.

This information isn't hot off the press so why are companies still including bumper pads in their Crib sets? Well like most things it the all mighty power of the dollar, parents want that decorative piece to tie together their theme nursery for the newly expected bundle of joy.

But Skip-Hop, a company selling baby related products has made a bold movement forward, beginning this year the company has created a new line of crib sets they sell called Complete Sheet bumper-free crib bedding. Rather than having the bold decorative design on a bumper they have sew a bold patterns on the sides of the fitted sheet to product the same look as with a crib bumper.

What else can a caregiver do to prevent SIDS? In 2008 a study on wither the use of fans reduce the risk of SIDS in infants, the researchers concluded that sleeping with a fan lowers SIDS risk by more than 70%.

But let's take a look back at the Complete Sheet by Skip Hop, and see the design of the sheets. Because let's be honest the selection provide is cute but very limited and not to everyone's taste. For those who are more incline to be crafty it's good to know the design is pretty simple to mimic at home with a pattern and a sewing machine.

Basically your looking at cutting out the flat portion of the sheet with the smaller print fabric, and with the bolder piece of fabric attaching it to the flat sheet with binding and processing as normal from there.

I have yet to find a gender neutral print design that I love to create this project myself, but once I do I will post a tutorial on the process.
